Importance of exercise & health benefits

Active Learning are more than aware of the levels of obesity in the UK. We are helping to combat this problem by delivering fun sporting activities and educating children of the importance of being physically active. We offer advice on nutrition and the importance of healthy eating to further educate all children.

The benefits of being active...

• There is clear evidence to suggest that participating in physical activity in schools can lead to higher attainment grades, less truancy and better disciplinary records

• It has been proven that being active and taking part in sport improves your concentration and energy levels

• Reducing obesity levels

In July 2004, the UK Government released alarming new statistics on child health, showing nearly 27% of Children in the UK between the ages of 2-15 are seen to be overweight or obese. Obesity is associated with many health problems, which can lead to damaging short and long term effects. Active Learning are assisting in tackling the nationwide problem.

A study of schools by the ISC shows a correlation between the number of extracurricular activities schools offer and the proportion of pupils getting better attainment grades. The research found that participation in extra activities raised pupils’ self-esteem and led to lower levels of depression and unauthorised absences.

“Obesity has grown by nearly 400% in the last 25 years” The House of Commons Health Committee

Why is exercise/physical activity so important to children?

• Increased physical activity has been associated with an increased life expectancy and decrease risk of cardiovascular disease and other related disease i.e. obesity

• Physical activity produces overall physical, psychological and social benefits.

Inactive children become inactive adults

Physical activity also helps with:

• Reducing blood pressure

• Improved psychological well being

• Reducing risks of diabetes and some forms of cancer

• Improved confidence and higher self-esteem

It is clear from this graph that obesity is raising significantly throughout the UK, mainly due to the following factors:

1. Lack of exercise
